NAKIVO Helps Chemical Manufacturer Increase Backup Speed by 7 Times

Transpek Industry Limited, a chemical manufacturing company headquartered in India, carries out processes such as chlorination, sulfonation and amination, among others. The company also holds several ISO certifications.
The company’s IT infrastructure is run out of two sites with six physical servers, and all services run on VMware. The company’s VMs run customized applications, including a visitor management system, a deposit management system and a contractor management system, as well as ERP, HRMS and other services. Any data loss can hamper Transpek’s productivity, resulting in the unavailability of important information and leading to business losses.
Transpek protected their IT infrastructure with built-in VMware tools, which backed up VMs and files. Because Transpek’s built-in VMware tools could not run scheduled backups and took a long time to back up all data, the company decided to try another VM backup solution. The recovery process also did not meet the company’s needs, as recoveries of full VMs were time-consuming. Backups would simply fail without any warning or reason, and VM backup times ranged from five to seven hours for small VMs over a low-bandwidth WAN link. Moreover, the tools were not user-friendly and had no proper interface.
Solution
Transpek decided to switch to NAKIVO Backup & Replication. For Transpek, NAKIVO Backup & Replication’s main advantage is that the solution can be installed on a QNAP NAS, so software and hardware can be managed from one place.
“The previous tools were bulky and required special skills to administer,” says Praful Soni, Senior IT Manager at Transpek. “However, the installation and configuration of NAKIVO Backup & Replication was just awesome. No special training was needed due to the software having a web-based interface. We installed NAKIVO’s Director and Transporter on our QNAP NAS devices at our two locations. We also used NAKIVO’s backup repository on a QNAP, which makes our backup and recovery processes easy and fast.”
NAKIVO Backup & Replication decreased Transpek’s backup time. “The initial first backup job takes hardly 60-70 minutes, and the incremental one takes anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes,” says Praful. “We perform daily backups for our critical servers and weekly backups for non-critical VMs. The efficiency of data transfers using NAKIVO Backup & Replication is awesome, as we can use network acceleration when performing vSphere VM backups to save network bandwidth and double the backup speed over WAN and busy LAN. We can also achieve a significantly better backup performance while reducing the load on our production network with LAN-free data transfer modes.”
An instant VM recovery was not possible with the previous tools used by Transpek. Now the company can recover entire VMs almost instantaneously with NAKIVO Backup & Replication. With screenshot verification, Transpek makes sure all backups are successful and recoverable. “We are also able to keep a backup copy at our disaster recovery site, so if there is a disaster at our primary site where the actual VM backup occurred, we can recover that VM at our DR site,” says Praful.
Results
NAKIVO Backup & Replication helped improve Transpek’s backup performance, save the company time on backup administration, and increase data protection reliability, with new functionalities. The IT team was able to increase the company’s backup speed seven-fold with NAKIVO Backup & Replication, and they now spend minimal time on backup and recovery administration.
