Reduce Storage Consumption by up to 17X and Accelerate VM Backup

The quantity of business data has drastically increased in recent years. This results in two problems for modern companies. The first one is the amount of storage space that backups occupy. The second is significant load on the production network created by backup operations, especially if they are run during business hours.

NAKIVO Backup & Replication and Dell EMC Data Domain Boost offer a combined solution for both of these challenges. By using NAKIVO Backup & Replication along with the source-side deduplication of Dell EMC Data Domain Boost, you can perform VM backups 50% faster while reducing the size of your backups by up to 94%. This means that you can offload your network and save storage space at the same time.

How the Integration Works

To use the source-side deduplication offered by Dell EMC Data Domain Boost, the BoostFS plugin must be installed on the transporter instance of NAKIVO Backup & Replication. The plugin acts as a local share and deduplicates all backups before they are transferred over the network.

Source-Side Deduplication vs. Target-Side Deduplication

The most common type of deduplication is target-side deduplication. In this case, the deduplication occurs in the backup repository after data transfer. Source-side deduplication, however, is performed on the client side, meaning that only fully deduplicated data is sent over the network to the backup repository. Using source-side deduplication offers significant advantages, such as faster backups and more efficient use of bandwidth as well as CPU.

Features

Low Storage Space Consumption

With astounding deduplication ratios of up to 17:1, you can save a considerable amount of space. The process eliminates redundant and duplicate data during backup, sending only unique data to the backup repository. The deduplication performed by EMC DD Boost can dramatically reduce the need for storage space expansion and save your money.

Higher VM Backup Speed

With EMC DD Boost you can increase the speed of your backups by up to 50%. Because deduplication is performed on the source side, only unique and fully deduped data is sent over the network. With only a small fraction of your original data being sent to the repository, source-side deduplication can significantly decrease the amount of time needed by your backup jobs.

Optimal Bandwidth Usage

Performing deduplication on the client side greatly offloads the network. By sending only small amounts of already-fully-deduplicated data through the network, the feature can decrease the load on your production network by as much as 99%. This means that you may not even notice that your virtual environment is being backed up during business hours.
